Flag Burning In Arlington Prompts Investigation

Police are asking for the public's help in finding out who set a flag on fire in town.

ARLINGTON, MA — After an officer noticed a flag burning above a local business on Aug. 15, Arlington Police Department are asking for the public's help in figuring out what caused the fire.

At approximately 6:15 a.m., Aug. 15, an officer on patrol noticed that an American Flag at Minuteman Repair, 111 Massachusetts Ave., was on fire.

The Arlington Fire Department was called in for assistance, however the fire had already burned itself out by the time firefighters arrived. The flag was destroyed.
Additional Arlington Police Officers responded to the scene to search the area for suspects. One man was interviewed on Amsden Street, but following an investigation, police determined he was not connected to the fire.
The Arlington Police Department is actively investigating the incident. Anyone who was in the area at the time, or who may have witnessed someone starting the fire, is asked to contact Arlington Police at 781-643-1212.
Back in 1989 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that flag-burning was a form of protest protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution.
Then President-Elect Donald Trump said on Twitter in 2016 he believed that people who burned the flag should be jailed - a penalty that would violate the Constitution.

Nobody should be allowed to burn the American flag - if they do, there must be consequences - perhaps loss of citizenship or year in jail! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 29, 2016
