Man at Burlington Mall Had Umbrella, Not Gun

The Massachusetts State Police have confirmed that the man originally believed to have a gun at the Burlington Mall had an umbrella

At around noon today the Massachusetts State Police confirmed the man originally believed to possibly have a is not a threat.

"The man in question called State Police from Lahey Clinic, where he reportedly is an employee, to say he was the person who was seen in the mall," a release from the Mass State Police says. "The call was taken by State Police Communications Center. Troopers and officers responded to the area of the Clinic and questioned him and determined he was not carrying a weapon and is not a threat."

Police added the man's claim was verified by security tapes.

"Witnesses and video surveillance confirm he is the person," the release states. "The situation is cleared."

A second release from the state police confirms that the man was carying an umbrella and that it was mistaken for a rifle.

The incident began when, at approximately 10:15 a.m., police were called to the for a report of a man with a rifle inside the store. The mall was evacuated. 

In addition to , members of the Woburn Police Department, Wilmington Police Department, Mass State Police and NEMLEC SWAT team also responded to the scene.
