Northeastern at Mary Cummings Park

Aggressive Expansion Plans Lead to Resistance

Northeastern University is pursuing aggressive expansion tactics here in Burlington (as well as in Nahant). Their Burlington campus is surrounded on all side by Mary Cummings Park, due to the odd history of the park. Northeastern has rushed through the permitting of a large drone cage right on the edge of the park, and are now attempting to force through approval of a 69-foot tall, 103,000 square foot research building, also right be the edge of the Park.

They have presented the site plan as a work of long standing that they can not afford to modify, although the town only received the plans for a first look this January.

The new drone cage is visible from much of the park, and the new research building with further degrade the look of the park.

The Trustees of Reservations is slated to become park managers in the near future, but the park is being degraded by Northeastern before The Trustees can even get started making the park into a major resource for people around Burlington. It would be the closest Trustees property to Boston.
