CAMBRIDGE, MA — One man is in custody and two others are in critical condition after a shooting on Memorial Drive Monday afternoon, according to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan.

Tyler Brown, 46, has been named as the shooter. Cambridge police told Patch that its officers responded to the scene at approximately 1:30 p.m. after receiving multiple reports of gunshots being fired near the intersection of River Street.

The Boston Police Department also contacted Cambridge police, stating that Brown had a gun and was acting erratically. Brown reportedly started opening fire into traffic with an assault-style rifle.

When law enforcement arrived, he began shooting at them as well before ultimately surrendering. Ryan said that Brown suffered gunshot wounds to his "extremities" after being shot by a Trooper and a former Marine who had a license to carry. He is now in the ICU at a nearby hospital. Two people were seen being loaded into ambulances by emergency responders in the immediate aftermath of the altercation.

Ryan played an audio recording during a press conference on Monday evening, which included heavy sounds of gunfire and police sirens.

"I would venture to guess that there is no one in this room who hasn't had to travel along that stretch of Memorial Drive," Ryan said during the press conference. "I cannot begin to address the trauma that was experienced by everyone who was out there."

State Trooper Brandon Doherty confirmed to Patch that at least one of the people injured is being treated for a gunshot wound. A black Dodge vehicle was also seen off to the side of the road, having apparently crashed into a tree and a large rock.

Cambridge, Harvard University, and the Massachusetts State Police are investigating the incident. According to Cambridge police, there is no ongoing danger to the public. According to Ryan, Brown is set to be charged with two counts of armed assault with intent to murder and illegal firearm possession charges. Other charges may be added as the investigation continues.

"What happened today cannot stand," Ryan said.

Ryan said that officials would address Brown's criminal history during an upcoming arraignment, in which the date has not yet been announced. Further details about the victims, other than their gender, have not been revealed either.
