Cambridge Church Steeple Will Be Taken Down Following Fire: Report

CAMBRIDGE, MA — The steeple will be taken down following a six-alarm fire at Faith Lutheran Church in Cambridge Sunday evening, officials told WHDH.

Broadway between Norfolk and Prospect Streets remains closed as fire companies and police officers work at the scene, Cambridge Fire said Monday morning. Officials are also on the scene assisting with pedestrian safety and detours.

No injuries have been reported and the cause and origin of the fire, which was first reported at 5:29 p.m. Sunday, are still under investigation, officials said late Sunday night.

The church’s pastor told WHDH that said there was no one inside the building when the fire broke out.

Faith Lutheran Church, which celebrated Easter service at 10 a.m. Sunday, was captured on video as smoke poured from its steeple windows in a recording posted Sunday evening to Twitter.

Reverand Robin Lutjohann told the outlet that the destruction of the church is “heartbreaking," adding that “It is a place that is loved by the community.”

“There’s a sign in front of the building, a banner that we’ve put up there, ever since COVID, during the season of Easter, which says, ‘We will rise.’ And we will," Lutjohann told WHDH.
