$169 Million Supplemental Budget Signed into Law by Governor Patrick

Representative is pleased to announce the final approval of the $169 million supplemental budget. This budget includes $65 million in additional aid to communities throughout the Commonwealth. Canton is receiving $131,146 as part of this supplemental budget.

“Given these economic times we were very cautious in developing the 2012 budget. Higher than estimated tax revenues have allowed us to give a bit more financial assistance to communities, which is beneficial, particularly in this economic climate,” commented Representative Galvin.

The supplemental budget also includes $39 million for the MassWorks infrastructure improvement project, which will generate economic development opportunities and create jobs. The trial courts, which have seen numerous budget cuts resulting in system wide layoffs over the past few years, will be receiving an additional $12 million. In addition, the supplemental budget directs $350 million to the rainy day fund, which will bring the fund up to $1.4 billion.   Prior to the recession in 2008, the fund had reached $2.3 billion. 

Also included, is $10 million in aid to communities devastated by tornados in June, $6.2 million to reimburse cities and towns for costs associated with the December 2008 ice storm, $850,000 for adult immunizations and vaccines, $3 million for adult basic education programs, and $10 million to allow substance abusers to be committed by the courts to a treatment program for up to 90 days. The law also establishes a special commission to review the state’s electronic benefit card system, which is the assistance program for those receiving welfare benefits.
