Cell Phone Claim Leads to Drug Possession Charges

Officers find more than a dozen bags of contraband following foot chase.

Police arrested a Dorchester man in Charlestown, Wednesday, following a short chase that ended on Brighton Street.

According to a police report, officers saw Jose Calderon-Nievez, of 169 Callender Street in Dorchester, running down Brighton Street around 7:22 p.m. Wednesday.  Shortly after they spotted him, the report said, officers saw him throw an object later identified as a knife into a nearby yard.

The officers slowed as a witness ran up to the car to report that she had just seen Calderon-Nievez chasing another man.

Officers turned the corner and saw Calderon-Nievez jump a fence into 19 Brighton Street, where they soon after caught him.

After the arrest, a witness informed officers that Calderon-Nievez left his vehicle parked and running at 18 Brighton Street.

Inside the vehicle, officers found $165 cash and more than a dozen plastic bags of a substance they believed to be heroin.

During questioning, Calderon-Nievez, who spoke through a translator, said that he had not been in the vehicle, but then asked officers if they had found his phone inside. Officers had.

As a result of the incident, the department charged Calderon-Nievez with possession of a class A substance with the intent to distribute it.
