Police Laud Youths Who Find, Return Backpack

There are good ways to wind up in a police log.

A group of Charlestown youths demonstrated recently that there are positive ways to end up in a police log.

According to a report supplied by district A-15 police, a Charlestown woman visited the police station on April 9 to report that four youths in her company found an open backpack earlier that day.

The youths spotted the backpack in the field at Charlestown High School. The zipper hung open, the report said, and the group found personal papers nearby.

The woman “directed her son and his friends to gather up all the papers and she put them in the backpack,” the report said.

After the group brought the backpack to the district A-15 police department, an officer inspected the bag’s contents and found a wallet with a UMass Boston student ID along with a checkbook and a social security card.

Using the identification, officers were able to contact the bag’s owner, who listened to a list of its contents and reported that nothing seemed to be missing.

The bag’s owner picked it up the following day.
