Concert & Choral Evensong, March 6 at Trinity Episcopal Church

Concordia Consort presents 30-minute prelude recital to Choral Evensong, March 6 at 5 PM in Concord.

Trinity Episcopal Church in Concord invites you to a 30-minute prelude recital given by Concordia Consort (Eileen Cecelia Callahan, soprano; with Sheila Beardslee, director, Nouri Newman, Michael Shonle and Brian Warnock, recorders) on Sunday, March 6. 2016 at 5 PM in Trinity’s Main Sanctuary at 81 Elm Street in Concord. Concordia Consort, ensemble in residence at Trinity, will present a half-hour program of music from their Lenten program, Teares of a Sorrowful Soule, featuring intensely passionate chorales and psalms paired with powerful instrumental pieces by Byrd, Bach, Hassler, Pedersen, Scarlatti, Buxtehude and Pachelbel.

Following Concordia Consort’s performance, Trinity’s Parish Choir will sing Choral Evensong under the direction of Robert Barney, organist and music director. The choir will sing “Responses” by Wesley and Luther, and the “Magnificat” and “Nunc dimittis” canticles set by Thomas Weelkes. The choir will also sing William Mundy’s anthem “O Lord, maker of all things.”

Evensong — the service of Evening Prayer sung by a choir — dates back to 1549 and is still sung daily in cathedrals in England and other countries within the Anglican Communion. For centuries, the service has inspired the creation of music specifically for it. At Trinity Episcopal Church in Concord, Evensong is held several times over the year, sung by the Trinity Parish Choir (adults) or visiting choirs, and one choral evensong is given annually by Trinity’s Youth Choir.

This contemplative program of music and prayer takes place at Trinity Episcopal Church, 81 Elm Street in Concord, and is open to all in the community. For further information on this or other programs at Trinity Episcopal Church, please call Trinity’s parish office, 978/369-3715 or visit Trinity on line.
