Biorobotics Event in Concord

Tuesday, April 7th at 7pm. FREE Lecture - "How Does Animal Movement Inspire Biorobotics?" Harvey Wheeler Center, 1276 Main St. Concord.

Biological studies of animal movement and behavior can inspire the development of legged robots that move over natural terrain and help to guide the control of flying ‘unmanned aerial vehicles’ (UAVs). On Tuesday, April 7th at 7pm in Concord’s Harvey Wheeler Center (1276 Main St.), Professor Andrew Biewener will talk about how his lab at the Concord Field Station conducts these studies. There will be refreshments served at 7pm and the lecture will begin at 7:30pm.

Andrew Biewener is the Charles P. Lyman Professor of Biology in the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University, and Director of the Concord Field Station. His research includes investigating how different animals achieve stability when running over irregular terrain and how birds navigate through cluttered environments. His lab’s more recent work is being carried out in collaboration with falconers who fly their birds of prey using a head-cam video and body-mounted GPS devices in order to study how raptors fly through natural environments to pursue their prey.

This is an annual lecture presented by the Concord Land Conservation Trust and Harvard University in memory of Professor Richard Taylor who was a leading force in protecting the Estabrook Woods. It is free and the public is welcome.
