“Charlotte Brontë and Jane Eyre”, by Randall Warniers

Monday, November 7th at 7:00 p.m. at Concord Free Public Library (Fowler Branch - 1322 Main Street)

Concord - To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Charlotte Brontë’s birth, Randall Warniers will present a talk on the writer’s life and her novel Jane Eyre. The talk will take place at the Fowler Branch of the Concord Free Public Library (1322 Main Street) on Monday, November 7th at 7:00 PM.

Charlotte Brontë’s 1847 novel Jane Eyre is one of the enduring achievements of 19th-century British literature. The book tells the story of Jane, orphaned at an early age, who is forced to endure childhood with uncaring relatives and, later, in a brutal orphanage. As a young adult, she is hired as governess for the daughter of Mr. Rochester, a powerful but mysterious master who hides a dark secret. The novel, told from Jane’s first-person autobiographical point of view, is a masterpiece of narrative storytelling and internal emotion, encompassing psychology, morality, sexuality, poetry, horror, and social criticism. The talk will discuss three topics: the brilliance of Jane Eyre as a novel, Charlotte Brontë’s family life in the wilds of northern England, and the context of social changes in mid-nineteenth century Victorian society.

Randall Warniers has pursued interests in 19th-century British literature and early 20th-century American cinema for decades. He has worked in the world of publishing since 1989, and he is currently a freelance editor and book publisher.
