📰 News we're reading

1. A Concord man believes he's a victim of government tyranny. Town Hall says he's the tyrant. (boston.com) — A long-running fight over public access to Estabrook Trail in Concord has pitted homeowner Brooks Read and neighboring landowners against Town Hall, dog walkers, and hikers, with courts repeatedly affirming public access. Even after losing in court, Read continues posting legal documents roadside, issuing no-trespass letters, and clashing with Concord police and residents, leaving the once-popular trail eerily quiet and unwelcoming.

2. See who's No. 1 in the 1st MIAA girls soccer power rankings of 2026 (masslive.com) — Concord‑Carlisle's girls soccer team has grabbed the No. 1 spot in the first MIAA Division 1 power rankings of 2026, edging out state finalist Franklin. The Patriots also sit atop the boys Division 1 list, with the two programs combining for an 11‑0‑1 start and raising expectations that both squads could make deep state tournament runs this fall.

3. Mass Hort's gardens and art classes showcase fall in Wellesley (wcvb.com) — A Concord‑based landscape architect turned botanical artist, Lauren Meier, is among those inspired by Mass Hort's fall gardens, using live plant specimens to refine her detailed drawings. The 36‑acre Elm Bank property in nearby Wellesley and Dover offers classes where locals can study autumn colors up close, learn precise botanical illustration techniques, and see how close observation deepens appreciation for New England plants.

4. Revealing the Science of Walden (uconn.edu) — Concord residents connected to Walden Pond will appreciate a new book, "The Walden Experiments," which highlights the scientific side of Henry David Thoreau's classic. Author Robert Thorson argues that Thoreau's observations at Walden helped launch America's environmental movement and shows how blending science with the humanities can guide today's responses to climate and sustainability challenges.

5. Medusa counter-drone program continues to evolve with Huntsville engineering work (256today.com) — Concord will host part of the engineering work on the Air Force's Medusa counter-drone system, alongside teams in Huntsville, Reston, and Newport, through 2027. The contract with Leidos supports continued development of a command-and-control network that links sensors and drone-defeat tools, with Huntsville serving as a hub for field engineers supporting Medusa sites worldwide.
