Dedham Bank Robbery Suspect Charged in Stoneham Case

Investigators believe James Twombly may also be behind four other bank robberies in the area.

A Hingham man will face an unarmed bank robbery charge in will likely face additional charges in other jurisdictions.

James Twombly, 28, was arrested by Stoneham police Monday and stands accused of robbing a Bank of America in Stoneham last month and four other banks in the Boston metropolitan area.

According to police, video surveillance from May 4 showed the suspect at the Stoneham bank giving a teller a handwritten note demanding money. The teller handed the suspect an unknown amount of cash before he fled out the front door.

Upon viewing still images from recent area bank robberies, investigators determined the same suspect was likely behind four other bank robberies in Quincy, Medford, Randolph, and Dedham.

After police received multiple tips that the suspect was likely Twombly, a check of his records from the RMV showed that his license photo matched the surveillance images. A background check revealed Twombly, is on probation until April 2016 and a probation official confirmed Twombly’s identity.

A warrant for Twombly’s arrest was obtained Monday afternoon and he was arrested without incident in Kingston.

Twombly’s photo was also distributed online on MassMostWanted.org and received air time on the FOX 25 News.

“We would like to thank members of the public and Fox 25 News for aiding in our investigation. It is through the help of the public that we were able to identify this suspect,” Police Chief James McIntyresaid. “I also applaud the work of Detective Dalis and the detectives from the other communities involved in this case. It was truly a joint effort that we were able to apprehend this suspect.”

Stoneham Detective Chris Dalis investigated the case along with the FBI Bank Robbery Task Force.

Twombly is scheduled to be arraigned at Woburn District Court.
