Police Log: Officers Investigate Screams, Sound of Gunshots Near Whitehall Street

The following information was provided by the Dedham Police Department. Where arrests are mentioned, they do not indicate conviction.

Monday, Aug. 11

At 11 a.m., a woman reported that her driver’s license, prescription to medication and a pink hair brush were stolen while staying at a hotel in Dedham. The woman told police that she left her purse for a few moments and when she returned she noticed her driver’s license was missing, along with the other items. Officers advised the woman on ordering a new license and retrieving a lost/stolen prescription.

At 4 p.m., police responded to CVS on Bussey Street on a report of a female shoplifter in custody. Officers spoke with Loss Prevention staff who explained that the suspect stole about $90.74 worth of merchandise, including baby formula and an Italian sub. Officers subsequently arrested the suspect and placed her in custody.

At 6:25 p.m., a resident of Curve Street told Dedham Police that a man tried to gain access to her house and fled on a black bike.

At about 6:55 p.m., police received a report of kids throwing rocks at a home.

Tuesday, Aug. 12

At about 12:45 a.m., police responded to the Halfway Cafe in Dedham on a report of a disturbance. A bartender at the venue reportedly refused to serve a man who was had been refusing to leave the area. Police responded and spoke with the man in question, who said he’d been drinking at a bar in West Roxbury before going to Dedham, where he ordered a beer and then proceeded to use the restroom. When he exited the restroom, he found a baby stool placed in front of the door, and felt that the people at the bar were making fun of him, and when no one admitted to it, he became angry, according to police records. The bartender then denied the man a beer and he left the restaurant and paced outside the front door, later admitting to police that he overreacted and became too upset. Police spoke with staff at the bar who said the man had become irate and that he was “totally out of control,” according to police records. Management subsequently requested a trespass order against the man.

At 10:45 a.m., police received a report of a stolen bicycle, a Trek mountain bike colored black and green and having hand grips.

At 2:10 p.m., police received a report of a stolen vehicle, a 2011 red Honda Civic.

Wednesday, Aug. 13

At 8:43 p.m., police arrested Duncan Hezekiah on an active warrant out of Boston District Court.

Thursday, Aug. 14

At about 6:43 p.m., police responded to Bobs Discount Furniture on a report of a stolen cell phone. A caller told police that she had put her iPhone down and forgot about it, and when she went back to retrieve it, the phone was gone. The phone was later located in the area of Franklin Park, and the woman was advised to contact Boston Police and the phone carrier.

At about 7:36 p.m. police responded to Stop and SHop for a report of a shoplifter in custody. Upon arrival officers spoke with Loss Prevention who said that a man tried to walk out of the store with cranberry juice without paying and had allegedly done the same thing the day before. The man was told not to return to the store.

Friday, Aug. 15

At about 3:42 p.m., Dedham Animal Control responded to a report of a dead cat in a resident’s yard. The Animal Control Officer responded and collected a deceased domestic rabbit.

Saturday, Aug. 16

At 2:40 a.m., police responded to Veterans Road on a report of a disturbance. Upon arrival, officers spoke with four females who were in the back of a residence on the roadway and told them to keep the noise down.

At 1:51 p.m., officer responded to b.good at Legacy Place on a report of two dogs that had been inside a vehicle for an extended period of time. Police observed two dogs in the back of a blue 2008 Honda CRV. The two front windows of the vehicle were reportedly open about an inch and the sunroof had also been open. Witnesses in the area and Legacy Place staff estimated the dogs to have been left in the vehicle anywhere between 60 and 90 minutes, and after waiting 20 additional minutes for the owner to return to the vehicle, police and Legacy security staff unlocked the driver’s side door from the outside and removed the dogs, giving them water. The dogs were transported to Tuft’s Veterinary Clinic in Walpole, where the owner arrived and was spoken to by police.

At about 4:33 p.m., police responded to Whitehall Street on a report of women screaming and what were believed to be four or five gun shots. A Caller and a witness said they heard a woman scream in the area for several minutes, then heard the gun shots from the area around Greenhood Street. Police checked the area and spoke with residents, but no one else had heard anything, according to police records.

Monday, Aug. 18

At about 12:24 a.m., police responded to a report of a suspicious person attempting to enter an abandoned home on Lincoln Street. A caller told police that a vehicle had pulled into his neighbor’s driveway, then pulled back out and into the driveway of another property, which the caller said had been unoccupied for a while. The caller said the driver of the vehicle then went to the backdoor of the building and entered the home. The vehicle, however, was gone on arrival. Police checked the area and the home and found it to be secure and it did not appear that anyone was inside the property, according to police records.
