Police Log: Officers Put Down Potentially Rabid Raccoon on Porch

Monday, July 28

At 10:22 a.m., police responded to the rotary on Washington Street, where two cars collided, with one of the drivers reporting to police that he was unaware he struck another vehicle.

At 11:50 a.m., police responded to a report of a two-car accident on Washington Street, an event that occurred during a downpour, causing the roads to be slippery, according to police records.

At 2:16 p.m., a man reported to police that a tree had fallen on the hood of his Ford F-150 truck during a rain storm, causing damage to the hood.

At 4:10 p.m., police received a report of a hit and run accident involving a 1999 Toyota Camry in the area of Providence Highway.

Tuesday, July 29

At about 2:02 p.m., police responded to Work ‘N Gear on a report of shoplifting that occurred the day before at around 9:50 a.m. Police obtained surveillance footage that showed an individual removing two pairs of work boots from their boxes; he was seen cutting off the security tags and then allegedly placed both pairs of boots into a plastic shopping bag before leaving the store. The total value of the boots came to about $334.99. The matter is under investigation.

Thursday, July 31

At 9:47 a.m., officers on patrol witnessed a vehicle fail to stop for a red light at the intersection of Curve and Washington streets, and subsequently pulled the vehicle over on Incinerator Road. While speaking with the driver, police determined that the man, Dennis Walch, 33, had a default warrant out of Dedham District Court and he was subsequently arrested.

Friday, Aug. 1

At about 12:15 p.m., police received a report of theft of a canoe. The boat’s owner told police that every summer he leaves the canoe on the ground next to his boathouse and reported that while he usually locks the boat to the gate, on this particular date he did not and later discovered the boat to be gone. The matter is under investigation.

At 4:50 p.m., police responded to Sears at the Dedham Mall on a report of a shoplifter who was being detained by Loss Prevention. Staff told police that the suspect, one Daniel Hancock, had allegedly taken a $60 audio speaker and left the store without paying for it. Staff located the man and brought him back into the store. He was arrested without incident, according to police records.

Sunday, Aug. 3

At 6:17 p.m., police responded to a report of a possible rabid raccoon. Police located a raccoon foaming at the mouth and lying on a porch of a Bismark Street home; officers used a shotgun to put the animal down and subsequently disposed of the deceased animal.
