Cape Cod Motorcyclists Hit Speeds Of Over 100, Dodged Police

Two men are charged after recklessly riding through the outer Cape. Police said they "greatly endangered the lives and safety" of others.

WELLFLEET, MA — The roadways of three outer Cape towns were the scene of a bit of chaos on Tuesday afternoon thanks to two motorcycle operators driving their machines over 100 miles per hour.

Now, two people face multiple charges including failure to stop for police and other roadway violations.

Wellfleet police said departments in Truro, Wellfleet, and Eastham received multiple calls reporting two motorcycles "being operated in a highly erratic manner" around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

The bikers — who were identified as Danilo Vasquez-Jimenez and Luis Fernando Gil Mejia — were initially heading north on Route 6. But when Truro officers tried to stop the drivers they turned around and sped south on Route 6 towards Wellfleet.

Truro officers didn't pursue the drivers but provided nearby departments with a description of the drivers and motorcycles.

Officers said that, although speed was a major issue, "the most dangerous fact" was that Vasquez-Jimenez and Gil Mejia were seen by witnesses weaving in and out of traffic, passing against pavement marking in areas where passing is not permitted and failing to maintain marked lanes.

"Their reckless behavior greatly endangered the lives and safety of all the motorists that were on Route 6 at the time," Wellfleet police said.

Although numerous police officers from all the involved jurisdictions attempted to stop Vasquez-Jimenez and Gil Mejia by turning on their emergency lights and sirens, no pursuit was initiated by any officers.

Eventually, Vasquez-Jimenez and Gil Mejia were seen pulling into the 7-11 parking lot in Eastham by officers in unmarked police vehicles.

Once the two suspects pulled into a parking area and stopped, officers from the Eastham and Wellfleet Police Department encountered Vasquez-Jimenez and Gil Mejia. They were subsequently taken into custody without incident, officials said.

They will be arraigned in the Orleans District Court for the following offenses:

  • Failure to stop for Police
  • Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  • Marked Lanes Violation
  • Speeding
  • Number plate violation
