SANDWICH, MA — An urban legend may have garnered some credence after a Cape Cod trick-or-treater uncovered that a piece of their Halloween candy had been tampered with, police said.

The Sandwich Police Department is investigating the report of a sewing needle found inside a piece of Halloween candy, officials said.

Police were called to a Sandwich residence on the evening of Nov. 1 after a resident reported that their child found a sewing needle in a piece of Halloween candy.

The mother of an 8-year-old child told police that her son was checking his candy and noticed something poking out of it. She checked the candy, a small Snickers bar, and found that the wrapper had been punctured and a sewing needle was found inside.

She then checked her other children’s candy and discovered a Twix candy bar that also contained a sewing needle, officials said.

Police said the family went trick or treating in the Main Street area of Sandwich, but the department hasn't yet received any other similar complaints.

However, officials are recommending that all candy should be inspected.

"If your child was trick or treating in the downtown area of Sandwich, please be extra vigilant in checking your children’s candy," officials said.
