Cape Cod World War II Veteran Honored Before 100th Birthday
Robert "Bob" Mercurio was presented a state senate and house citation ahead of his big milestone on Thursday.
FALMOUTH, MA — Bob Mercurio has seen a lot of life, both figuratively and literally. He'll reach a remarkable milestone this week.
On Saturday, Rep. Dylan Fernandes issued a Massachusetts House of Representatives citation to World War II veteran and Falmouth resident Robert “Bob” Mercurio, who turns 100 years old on Thursday.
“Mr. Mercurio’s life is an inspiration,” said Fernandes. “His dedication to duty, honor, and country exemplifies the very best of the Greatest Generation. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations for years to come. Falmouth is fortunate to have such a remarkable individual in our community.”

Born in Everett, Mercurio served as a Navy radioman, first class, from 1942 to 1946, followed by an additional four years in the Reserves, discharging in 1950.
His service took him around the world, including to Iwo Jima, where he witnessed the historic raising of the American flag on Mount Suribachi.

"Mr. Mercurio’s enduring legacy of patriotism is a model we all can follow,” said Senator Susan Moran, who presented a companion Massachusetts Senate citation. "Today, we celebrate not just a milestone in time but a lifetime of service and sacrifice. Mr. Mercurio’s steadfast dedication and unwavering commitment to his community embody the spirit of our country and our commonwealth."
In recognition of his service and his upcoming centenary, Fernandes and Moran presented Mercurio with the citations during a ceremony attended by family and friends, officials said.
