State officials allowed Barnstable voters to go to the polls until midnight Tuesday following a delay in the start of voting early Tuesday morning.

Town spokeswoman Lynne Poyant said the town clerk's vault was locked and inaccessible early Tuesday morning. That prevented election officials from getting ballots and opening polls at the typical 7 a.m. start time.

Voting was up and running by about 11 a.m. in Barnstable, according to the Secretary of the Commonwealth.

Polls officially closed at midnight, according to the Secretary of the Commonwealth.

"Polls are now closed in Barnstable. We thank the voters of Barnstable for their patience," the elections division of the secretary's office said.

"We also thank the neighboring town clerks who are pitching in tonight to help with the hand count of ballots in Barnstable, after finishing up in their own towns."
