Commodores Score First, Finish Second at Chatham

Falmouth jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the top of the first at Veterans Field on Tuesday, but the bats fell silent after that, and the Chatham A's edged the Commodores, 3-2.

Falmouth scored two runs in the first inning at Chatham's Veterans Field on Tuesday night, but none in the next eight, as the Commodores fell to the Anglers, 3-2.

Chatham starter Tim Cooney got himself into a jam in the first when, with one out, the lefty beaned second baseman Jake Rodriguez and walked designated hitter Jeremy Baltz. After left fielder Max White struck out, first baseman Barrett Barnes ripped a double to plate Rodriguez. Baltz came in from third on a passed ball during the next at bat, before right fielder Jared King grounded out to second to end the inning.

Falmouth starter Andrew Heaney began the game strong, recording two of his eventual eight strikeouts in the bottom of the first. In the second, though, he couldn't overcome an error by shortstop Eric Garcia that put Dane Philips on first to lead off the inning. Philips went to second on a one-out grounder by Alex Calbick, then scored when the next hitter, Kris Bryant, socked a double that rolled all the way to the wall in right-center.

Chatham tied it up and pulled ahead on the same at bat in the bottom of the fourth, which began with alternating singles and strikeouts—a sequence which ended with men on first and second and two outs. After Bryant walked to load the bases, John Gianis doubled down the left-field line, scoring Joe Sever and Richie Shaffer.

Meanwhile, Cooney had settled down. After the two-run first, he held Falmouth scoreless for the next six innings, giving way to reliever Tucker Healy to start the top of the eighth. Cooney finished with two runs on three hits and six strikeouts in seven innings.

Healy surrendered a hit but no runs in the eighth, and Matthew Koch, who has recently assumed the role of closer for Chatham, did the same in the ninth, recording his fifth save in as many chances.

Falmouth's bullpen was strong as well, with Taylor Sandefur and Josh Easley combining for three shutout innings.

The Commodores return home to to host the Harwich Mariners on Wednesday night, their last contest before the Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star Game at Boston's Fenway Park on Friday night.
