Commodres Still in Search of .500 After Loss to Wareham

Falmouth fell short of the Gatemen, 3-1, failing in its first attempt to reach the .500 mark since the early days of the season and snapping its five-game win streak.

Within one game of reaching .500 after starting the season 0-7, the Commodores couldn't muster enough offense to get by the Wareham Gatemen at on Tuesday night, dropping the game 3-1 for their first loss in six games, bringing their season record to 7-9.

After Wareham jumped out to the early lead, scoring three runs in the top of the first, the Gatemen threatened again in the third, putting men on first and second with only one out. But Falmouth reliever Nate Koneski put a quick stop to the rally, getting second baseman Mott Hyde to ground into an inning-ending double play on his first pitch.

Falmouth scored its sole run in the bottom of the third, when designated hitter Ross Heffley singled in center fielder Kyle VonTungeln, who had reached second on a pair of errors by the Wareham infield.

Falmouth threatened a few more times, but couldn't come up with the big hit when it was most needed. Jack Marder walked to lead off the bottom of the sixth, then went to third on an errant pick-off attempt. But reliever Daniel Feehan shut the Commodores down, retiring the next three hitters without damage. Marder was stranded after a grounder to third, a strikeout, and a fly out to center that would've scored him easily if there'd been less than two outs.

In the next inning, the Commodores got the tying runs to first and second, then to second and third, when first baseman Barrett Barnes and catcher Shane Rowland led off with back-to-back walks, and left fielder Billy Ferriter got a sacrifice bunt down just in front of the charging third baseman. But Falmouth failed to score again, as VonTungeln grounded back to the mound, and Heffley drove a long liner to deep right that was tracked down on the run by Wareham's Robert Refsnyder.

The Commodores will look to start a new streak, and move closer to .500, with a visit to Chatham on Wednesday night.
