Duxbury Tops Falmouth in Girls State Championship

It was a battle that lasted for three periods at TD Garden on Sunday morning. No. 1 ranked Duxbury came into the game with a record of 21-1-2, while Falmouth entered as the No. 2 seed with a record of 19-1-2.

The Lady Clippers were not favored to win, but that did not stop dozens of hopeful fans that cheered on the Cape’s best girls varsity hockey team from the stands.

At the start of the game, the Lady Clippers chose not to be introduced individually, and instead skated onto the ice as a team. It was a defining moment for the young women who have demonstrated great sportsmanship and cooperation throughout the season. 

The first period of the state championship came and went without either team finding the back of the net. In the second period, Duxbury managed to put a single puck past the Lady Clipper’s goalkeeper.

Despite many attempts (on both sides of the ice), neither team scored in the third period. In the end, Duxbury topped Falmouth and earned its third straight state title with a final score of 1-0.

Although it was a disappointing loss for the Lady Clippers, the state championship game was a performance that Falmouth can (and should) be proud of. One noteworthy player was Madison Scavoto, who had a terrific game in goal and stopped a stream of pucks that a less experienced player might have missed.
