Falmouth, Cape Fire Departments Provide Aid In Brockton Hospital Fire

Cape Cod fire departments responded to Brockton Hospital on Tuesday after a fire affected power in the building, prompting an evacuation.

FALMOUTH, MA — The Falmouth Fire Department was among a number of departments from the Cape to assist in a fire at Brockton Hospital on Tuesday morning, officials said.

According to Signature Healthcare, the organization that operates the hospital, a fire broke out at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, which affected the power in the building, prompting a full evacuation. Hospital officials said they were working on moving some patients to other area hospitals as of Tuesday afternoon.

Falmouth A-36 unit was on the scene, and officials shared information about the fire on Tuesday. According to them, a 10-alarm transformer fire occurred at an adjacent Brockton Hospital outbuilding, resulting in smoke and carbon monoxide entering Brockton Hospital.

"The entire hospital required evacuation as power has been cut off to the building and its standby generators," officials said. "Multiple ambulance strike teams assisted in the transportation of about 160 patients to alternate hospitals."

According to Brockton fire officials, 187 total patients were evacuated.

According to the Bourne Fire/Rescue and Emergency Services, the second ambulance strike team from Barnstable County also assisted with the hospital evacuation. Station 1 in Buzzards Bay was the staging area, officials said.

All staff with scheduled shifts at Brockton Hospital were asked to stay home on Wednesday, hospital officials said.
