Falmouth Commodores Back on Track with Win at Chatham

The Commodores scored six runs to overpower the Anglers on Wednesday night, moving within a game of .500.

Falmouth found enough offense to outlast the Chatham Anglers on Wednesday night, bringing its record to 8-9 on the year, and moving into a tie for second in the division.

The lead swung back and forth in the early innings. After Falmouth jumped in front with a run in the top of the first, Chatham answered with two in the bottom of the second. The Anglers loaded the bases, then scored on a fielder's choice putout at second, and an RBI single to right. Falmouth came back to tie it in the next inning, when second baseman Ross Heffley drove right fielder Billy Ferriter in from third on a one-out grounder to second.

Falmouth's big inning came in the fourth, when the Commodores scored three runs to retake the lead, this time for good. All the offense in the inning came with two outs. Three straight doubles by catcher Spencer Kieboom, designated hitter Max White, and first baseman Barrett Barnes put two runs on the board and a runner in scoring position, whom Ferriter chased home with an RBI single to center.

Chatham fought back, adding two more runs, but Falmouth answered with another, taking the score to 6-4, where it would stay.

Falmouth's newest roster addition, reliever Nathan Thornhill, made his Cape League debut in the eighth, retiring the side in order on an infield pop and two strikeouts. Fresh from the Texas Longhorns and the College World Series, Thornhill should add even greater depth to a pitching staff which is already among the best in the CCBL.

Closer John Simms took over in the ninth, striking out the first two hitters he faced, then inducing a weak grounder to second to finish off the save. Simms now has five saves and 15 strikeouts on the young season, and has yet to give up an earned run.

With the win, Falmouth is again within a game of the .500 mark, after an 0-7 start. The Commodores are now tied with Bourne and Wareham for second place in the Western Division with 16 points, trailing only Hyannis' 22. The Commodores will try to gain more ground on Friday night, when they visit the Brewster Whitecaps.
