Falmouth Is Getting A Drug Court
Drug court handles crimes pertaining to substance abuse and focuses on treatment over punishment.
FALMOUTH, MA — A drug court is coming to Falmouth District Court, Judge Christopher D. Welch told the Board of Selectmen Monday, according to the Falmouth Enterprise. Drug court handles crimes pertaining to substance abuse and focuses on treating addiction.
Treatment can include probation supervision, drug testing and a judge overseeing a patient's progress, the Enterprise reported. Welch told selectmen about 70 percent of crimes that come before Falmouth District Court judges are related to addiction, such as theft. The aim is to reduce crimes and the likelihood of reoffending.
The court, which opens May 23, will target high-risk users who cannot complete regular probation without additional intervention.
