In 2026, the Trump administration took significant action to halt or cancel billions of dollars in federal renewable energy funding, directly affecting commercial and community solar projects in Massachusetts.
Sources indicated that the Trump administration had terminated, frozen, or attempted to cancel roughly $3.7 billion in federal funding for Massachusetts, with over $187 million cut from the environmental sector specifically.
In October 2025, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) cancelled approximately $466 million in grants for more than twenty projects in Massachusetts, including solar, grid resilience, and industrial decarbonisation initiatives.
While specific tax credits and grants have been cut, federal incentives are evolving. For commercial solar projects starting construction by 4 July 2026, a 30% Investment Tax Credit (ITC) may still be available. However, it requires specific placement-in-service deadlines and compliance with new Domestic Content rules.
As of March 2026, federal funding for commercial solar projects in Massachusetts remains uncertain due to considerable legislative and administrative changes over the past year. While some grant programmes have been cancelled or paused, the basic federal tax incentives for businesses remain accessible but are subject to stricter deadlines and compliance requirements.
The Massachusetts Attorney General’s office and other bodies are actively challenging these funding cancellations.
Note: Past renewable energy projects: The two municipal wind turbines in Falmouth, known as Wind 1 and Wind 2, were removed in late 2022 following years of noise complaints and legal battles. Wind 1 was brought down on Monday, September 26, 2022, and Wind 2 was brought down on Wednesday, October 5, 2022.
