FALMOUTH, MA — The town is petitioning the state to fast-track the retirement of two police officers shot while responding to a reported disturbance in East Falmouth last summer. After nearly a year of working with medical professionals, and serving the town in various capacities, it has been determined Officers Don DeMiranda and Ryan Moore are unable to return to active duty, according to the Falmouth Enterprise.

DeMiranda was shot in the chest and shoulder, and Moore was shot in the neck on July 27, 2018 while responding to a call of a man breaking bottles in the Seacoast Shores neighborhood. Authorities said 21-year-old Malik Koval became agitated when police confronted him, got a gun from his house, and fired at the officers. Koval was shot multiple times but survived.

Falmouth selectmen affirmed a letter of retirement request to petition the state legislature for an early retirement given the violent nature of their injuries, the Enterprise reported. The petition will allow for the retirement process to be expedited.
