Falmouth Police Shoot Man in Sober House

Falmouth authorities said a "highly intoxicated" man pointed a gun at police after threatening suicide.

FALMOUTH, MA — Falmouth Police shot an allegedly drunk man inside his room at a sober house, police said Saturday morning.

Police say the man was holding a gun to his head making suicidal statements and entered the room he was barricaded in when negotiations failed. The man allegedly pointed the pistol at police and was shot once in the hip area.

The man suffered non-life-threatening injuries. No police officers were injured.

Officers responded to a call Friday night just after 8 at the Teaticket Highway residence for a man indirectly threatening suicide. The area was shut down Friday night and immediate neighbors were evacuated.

Witnesses told police the man was "heavily intoxicated" and holding a pistol to his head.

The man, when reached by cell phone, refused to surrender and continued to threaten suicide, police said.

The man was brought to Falmouth Hospital for treatment before being transferred to a Boston hospital.

The man is being charged with assault by means of a dangerous weapon, unlawful possession of a fireman, unlawful possession of ammunition, and a firearm violation with one prior violent crime.

State Police are investigating the officer-involved shooting.
