Surplus Falmouth Police Shotguns Will Be Destroyed

More than 25 surplus shotguns will be destroyed rather than traded in for fair market value, officials said. Here's what to know.

FALMOUTH, MA — Falmouth Town Manager Mike Renshaw shared at an April 1 Select Board meeting that the town has reached a decision on what to do with the Falmouth Police Department's surplus firearms.

Renshaw shared that 26 shotguns will be destroyed sometime this month or in early May. They will not be used toward trades for future departmental gun purchases.

The Falmouth Police Department is currently making arrangements with the Massachusetts State Police Crime Lab firearms identification section, which Renshaw said is based in Maynard.

This process won't cost Falmouth anything, a tradeoff officials were willing to make instead of trading the firearms back to Greenfield-based police supply vendor Jurek Brothers.

In March, Renshaw shared that changes were made to the town's existing firearm disposal policy, largely based on finding a way to offset lost funds when destroying weapons instead of trading them in for market value.
