The Mashpee Athletic Department hosted families on Tuesday for a gathering of families to "not only be together at this time but to collect donations" for families affected by the crash.
Around 2 a.m. on Tuesday, police responded to the crash in the area of Swain Circle on Carleton Drive, police said. When they arrived they found a heavily damaged Toyota Rav-4 that had struck a tree.
Six passengers of the Toyota Rav-4 were transported to area hospitals, two of which suffered what appear to be "life-threatening injuries," Mashpee Police Chief Scott Carline said. One of the passengers, a 17-year-old from Mashpee, died from injuries sustained in the accident.
Mashpee Fire Chief John Phelan confirmed to Patch Tuesday morning that there were a total of seven people in the car. One was uninjured.
Carline noted that all of the victims are between the ages of 15 and 17 from Mashpee and Falmouth.
Law enforcement officials are currently investigating the cause of the crash, but Carline said the car was found in the road's northbound lane and appeared to have been traveling in that direction.
He said while traveling north it appears that the driver lost control of the vehicle, leaving the roadway and striking the tree just south of Swain Circle.
Falmouth High School announced they'll provide resources for students this week following the crash, with school counselors and Falmouth Human Services officials available to meet with students and families on Friday.
Those sessions are available from 12 to 2 p.m. at the Falmouth High School library, officials said.
"Our hearts go out to everyone impacted by the car accident that occurred early Tuesday morning in Mashpee involving seven teenagers. The Mashpee and Falmouth communities are closely connected," said Falmouth Principal Alan Harris.
"Additionally, we know that these types of events impact all of us and teenagers in particular in unexpected ways."
The obituary states that the family is asking that donations in Barr's memory be made to I Got You, Inc. — The Ryan Hendricks Scholarship — 121 South Sandwich Rd., Mashpee, MA, 02649.
