Tempers Flare as Sox Hold Against Yankees

The benches cleared, but the real drama was in the ninth inning.

There was a lot of life in Fenway Park Tuesday night. It was a more reminiscent of the Yankees-Red Sox games 12 years ago. Well, except for the "We want A-Rod" chants.

Boston held on for a 5-3 victory against New York, while a soon-retiring Alex Rodriguez watched from the dugout as the fans begged for a chance to see him grab a bat.

Rick Porcello was his consistent self, offering eight solid innings, even getting into a war of words with Yankees third baseman Chase Headley that emptied both benches. Headley had just been thrown out at third base by Jackie Bradley Jr.

Andrew Benintendi stayed hot since his call-up, the 22-year-old stroking three hits in his Fenway debut. He looked to have hit his first home run, but it was overturned on review.

The crowd chanted for a pinch-hit appearance from Rodriguez while closer Craig Kimbrel was busy walking four batters in the ninth. Rodriguez, who said Friday will be his last game before becoming a team advisor, stayed on the bench while Matt Barnes relieved Kimbrel and struck out Marx Teixeira with the bases loaded to end the game for his first career save.
