More Wenham Residents Unemployed Than Hamilton

Both Hamilton and Wenham now have higher unemployment rates than late last summer but are still below the statewide unemployment rate in February.

A greater percentage of Wenham residents were unemployed in Wenham than in Hamilton in February, according to figures released on Tuesday by the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development. Both towns are below the statewide average.

In Hamilton, the unemployment rate dropped to 5.3 percent in February from 5.8 percent in January. But is higher than it was late last summer, when it was 4.4 percent. There are 195 people reporting they were out of work out of a workforce of 3,712 in February, according to the state government data. In January, 190 residents were out of work, the state said.

In Wenham, the unemployment rate dropped a full percentage point from to 7.1 percent from 6.1 percent, with 116 people reporting they were out of work out of a workforce of 1,888 in February, according to the state government data. In January, 136 residents were out of work, the state said.

The statewide unemployment rate was 6.8 percent in February.
