'We Show Our Children How to Act'

The Hamilton town clerk is asking voters to remember to be respectful and civil at Tuesday night's Special Town Meeting vote.

Voters at Tuesday night's Special Town Meeting in Hamilton should remember that they set an example for the next generation of voters in town, Town Clerk Jane Wetson said in advance of the meeting.

"We can agree to disagree and still be respectful of each other's opinion," Wetson said.

The meeting will take up just one question - whether the Hamilton town government will purchase the so-called Pirie property, an 80-acre farm on Bay Road, for $3.9 million.

Interest in the Special Town Meeting has been high, Wetson said, as measured by the number of phone calls and other inquiries coming into her office at Hamilton Town Hall in recent days.

The issue has drawn tremendous interest, with everything from energized debate on Patch to roadside signs and mailers in addition to coffee and cocktail get-togethers by supporters of both sides hoping to inform and "woo" the undecided.

She said she would like to remind voters that their actions set an example for younger residents, who may attend the meeting with their parents or see it televised on HWCam public access television.

"We show our children how to act," she said.

The meeting is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. at Winthrop Elementary School.
