When Does Roadside Leaf Pickup Happen?

Curbside and roadside leaf pickup in both Hamilton and Wenham will get underway in November.

Roadside collection of loose leaves in Wenham will begin Nov. 5 with one to two passes on every street in the town. That will be followed by a bagged leaf pick-up in December - if needed.

The Department of Public Works says it makes every effort to pass through each street twice, but due to the uncertainty of the weather it is not always possible. The DPW recommends residents check the town website for updates but the DPW cannot predict an exact day they will be on a certain street.

The Wenham Department of Public Works will start the loose leaf pick-up on the west side of town with Maple Street at the Danvers town line, then continue down Maple Street picking up the side streets, including Birch, Burley, Puritan and Mayflower Drive.

At Topsfield Road, the DPW will head pick up all side streets to the Hilltop and Burnham roads area (Lord’s Hill).  The DPW will then continue to Cedar and Cherry street and all side streets off Cherry Street to Route 1A. 

From there, collection crews will jump to the east side of town at Grapevine Road near the Beverly line. The DPW will head west down Grapevine Road, picking up all the side streets.  After Grapevine Road, crews will continue on to Dodges Row, Walnut Street and Larch Row to Route 1A, then do streets on Main Street including Fairview, Patti, Fiske, Lake, and Great Pond roads.

And lastly, the DPW will pick-up Main, Arbor, Perkins, Porter and all side streets.   This loose-leaf pick-up will end by Dec. 14.

If needed, a bagged leaf pick-up will be conducted on Monday, Dec. 17.

If a significant snowstorm occurs during the pickup, a bagged leaf pick-up will be conducted in the spring, the DPW said. For the bagged pickup, all leaves must be placed curbside in paper bags (no plastic bags are allowed) or open trash barrels by 7 a.m.

DPW Director Bill Tyack said he has been receiving several calls about the pickup, but it is being done on the same schedule as always.

“We always start the first full week in November and although leaves are falling earlier this year we are still finishing some paving projects that need to come first before the plant closes and we divert all our resources to the loose leaf pickup,” Tyack said.

In Hamilton, the first townwide pick up of bagged leaves will be on Saturday, Nov. 17 starting at 7 a.m.

The second (and final) pick up will be on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 7 a.m.

In both cases, bagged leaves must be along the curb or roadside by 7 a.m. and be in biodegradable paper bags or trash cans. The collection is only for leaves and not brush, branches or grass clippings.

On both days, there will be multiple trucks picking up leaves across town, according to the Hamilton Department of Public Works.

Leaves are not be picked up as part of the compost program.  

Hamilton residents can also drop off leaves for free at Brick Ends Farm on Highland Street.
