Hingham Youth wins BC High Oratorical Competition

Ryan D'Alelio of Hingham, a sophomore at Boston College High School, won the Greek I Oratorical contest at the 8th Annual Latin and Greek Declamation on March 4, 2013.

D'Alelio memorized and delivered a 13 line dramatic excerpt in Greek from Book 9 of Homer's Odyssey. He chose the selection which tells of Odysseus cleverly deceiving the one-eyed Cyclops by telling him that his name is “No one”.

9.362 αὐτὰρ ἐπεὶ Κύκλωπα περὶ φρένας ἤλυθεν οἶνος,

9.363 καὶ τότε δή μιν ἔπεσσι προσηύδων μειλιχίοισι:

9.364 Κύκλωψ, εἰρωτᾷς μ' ὄνομα κλυτόν, αὐτὰρ ἐγώ τοι

9.365 ἐξερέω: σὺ δέ μοι δὸς ξείνιον, ὥς περ ὑπέστης.

9.366 Οὖτις ἔμοιγ' ὄνομα: Οὖτιν δέ με κικλήσκουσι

9.367 μήτηρ ἠδὲ πατὴρ ἠδ' ἄλλοι πάντες ἑταῖροι.

9.368 ὣς ἐφάμην, ὁ δέ μ' αὐτίκ' ἀμείβετο νηλέϊ θυμῷ:

9.369 Οὖτιν ἐγὼ πύματον ἔδομαι μετὰ οἷς ἑτάροισι,

9.370 τοὺς δ' ἄλλους πρόσθεν: τὸ δέ τοι ξεινήϊον ἔσται.

9.371 ἦ καὶ ἀνακλινθεὶς πέσεν ὕπτιος, αὐτὰρ ἔπειτα

9.372 κεῖτ' ἀποδοχμώσας παχὺν αὐχένα, κὰδ δέ μιν ὕπνος

9.373 ᾕρει πανδαμάτωρ: φάρυγος δ' ἐξέσσυτο οἶνος

9.374 ψωμοί τ' ἀνδρόμεοι: ὁ δ' ἐρεύγετο οἰνοβαρείων.

The judges for the competition were Ms. Beth Killorin, Mr. Kevin Spinale S.J. and Mr. William Burke, present and past teachers at BC High.
