Derby Academy Donates Over 800 Food Items To Hull Multi-Service Center
Derby Academy service projects yield big numbers.

How can food, trick-or-treating and jeans help make the world a better place? Derby students knew how to use all three to make a difference in their local community and the world at large by taking part in service projects this fall. The three efforts were launched by the World Awareness Group, a student club, and the Middle School Student Council.
Responding to a need for food at Wellspring earlier this fall, the World Awareness group held a collection drive, gathering more than 800 food items to donate to the Multi-Service Center in Hull.
“We often think about those in need around the holidays, but the truth is that the need for basics like food and clothing exist all year long,” said World Awareness Group advisor Jerry Boardman. “Wellspring let us know they had a shortage of food, and we were quick to respond.”

Taking a broader look at service, the World Awareness Group engaged the Derby community in the Entertainment Industry Foundation’s Lee Denim Day to raise money for cancer research. Despite a dress code that states “no jeans” the students and faculty at donned their denim in support of Breast Cancer research. Each participating student and faculty member made a donation of $5 to wear denim for the day, raising more than $1,500. The money will go towards cancer research at facilities such as Johns Hopkins University and the Harvard University/Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
The Middle School Student Council organized the annual Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF project, raising $1,100 for the organization. Students from all divisions of the School participated in this great effort to support a worthy cause.
