Derby Academy Graduates 15 Hingham Students

Last month, the Derby Academy celebrated its 220th Derby Day Exercises where many Hingham graduates were honored.

Last month, the celebrated its 220th Derby Day Exercises.  The 204th Derby Lecture from the pulpit of was given to students, faculty, trustees, parents and guests by the Reverend Patrick Smith, assistant professor of theology and philosophy at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.

During the Derby Day ceremonies, 40 members of the Class of 2011 were honored for their time at Derby Academy. Head of School Andrea Archer awarded diplomas to the members of the graduating class. President of the Board of Trustees Walter Sullivan ’79 presented those diplomas to the students, including 15 Hingham residents, many of whom also earned additional awards during various end of year events. Eleven other Derby students who reside in Hingham received year-end recognition.

Several graduates were recognized as Lifers, meaning they completed 10 years of study at Derby Academy. Each year, one member of the Lifers is chosen to make the presentation of the eighth grade class gift to Head of School Andrea Archer. Christian Houghton was chosen to present on behalf of the Class of 2011.

Book Prizes are awarded at graduation to those students in the Upper School (grades 7 and 8) who have First Honors (year average of A- or higher) in all major subjects for the year.

First Honors certificates are awarded at the end of each semester to qualifying students in Grades 7 and 8 who have achieved an A- (90) or better average in all academic subjects, with no single academic or special subject below an A- (90) and Satisfactory marks in in art, music, drama, shop, sewing, computer and other special courses. The following students from Hingham received First Honors for the second semester at Derby Academy:
