Hingham High School Awards Senior Athletes

HHS Senior athletes were honored at last Wednesday's annual Athletic Awards Night.

Hingham High School athletes from over 20 varsity teams were honored at last Wednesday’s Senior Athletics Awards night.

As a whole, 72 percent of students participated in athletics this 2011-12 school year and helped the school produce three state championships, eight Patriot League Championships,  87 Patriot League All Stars, and four Sportsmanship awards.

HHS Athletic Director Margaret Conaty thanked all of the senior for their hard work and leadership.

“Tonight’s the night we hang our banners and we congratulate you for these accomplishments,” she said.

Aside from reading off all of the accomplishments of HHS seniors, Contaty advised the soon-to-be graduates to thank their parents for all of their support.

“No one will ever cheer harder for you, no one will cry softly with you, no one will relinquish their schedules  for you the way they do and no one will simply love you like they do,” she said when describing HHS parents.

Before senior varsity athletes received their awards, two student athletes addressed their fellow classmates.

Ryan Linehan spoke about the importance of pride while Abbie Barrett explained how she will always remember sportsmanship that Hingham Harbormen showed on the practice fields and during games.

“It’s important to keep in mind tonight is a celebration of all we have accomplished,” Linehan said.

Linehan said pride is the one word that comes to mind when he thinks of  Hingham sports. He said the responsibility of being a Hingham athlete is taking pride in one’s self by being a model citizen, excellent classmate, and the best teammate no matter what the circumstances.

Linehan pointed out that the whole school showed pride and came together as a team when his fellow high school hockey captain James Gordon was diagnosed with cancer this Spring.

“To see the team and our classmates come together so much like it already has, is something I am so proud of,” Linehan said. “I learned from them, that with the character that has been shown in the past few weeks is truly what pride in Hingham sports is all about.”

Barrett spoke more about her memories from being a three-spot athlete.

She explained that being part of an athletic team and sharing memories is what made a high school experience as best as it could be. She reminded her classmates that best friends have been made from team pasta parties, practices, bus rides, and team outings.

“ One thing that I have taken from being a part of Hingham athletics, is that no matter how bad you played, or how hard things are going for you, your teammates always knew how to cheer you up.

“We will always remember the individual times  and the great moments we have shared from being called student athletes.”
