Hingham High School Hits Back to Back Home Runs

HHS wins the Jordan's Furniture and the Red Sox Foundation's Play Ball campaign again by collecting more baseball and softball equipment for underprivileged children .

collected more baseball and softball equipment than any other school in the state to win Jordan's Furniture and the Red Sox Foundation’s Play Ball campaign for the second year in a row.

HHS Assistant Principal Rick Swanson, who coordinated the collection said the school raised so much equipment that it filled the back of his pick-up truck.

Swanson said with the help of students, faculty and staff, the school collected over 30 helmets, over 30 baseball bats,  over 35 gloves, and a wide variety of gently used cleats, catcher’s mitts, and baseball pants.

The donated items were given to underprivileged children  so they too can play baseball and softball.

“The opportunity to participate in sports can - and should - be a part of everybody's childhood,” Swanson said. “There's so much that can be learned on a baseball diamond. Every American boy and girl should have the chance to experience these things regardless of where they grow up.”

HHS won the and repeated that again this year by promoting the collection drive through daily announcements, , and mass emails.  The baseball captains also asked students to help out at a student assembly.

Win the victory, HHS students Shauna Sullivan, Ryan Linehan, Rob Madden, Kevin Minassian and Elizabeth Sypek were honored on Fenway Park in a pre-game ceremony before  the April 30 Red Sox game against the Oakland Athletics.

The School will also receive a visit from the Red Sox mascot Wally the Green Monster on Friday and a $2500 gift certificate to purchase new furniture for the teachers' lounge.

The High School has decided to donate the gift card to Thursday night’s Gordon Gala, a fundraiser for HHS senior James Gordon, who is battling cancer.

Swanson said the administration benefited from the Jordan’s gift card last year by using it to enhance their teacher’s lounge, and this year they wanted to use it to help a student in need.
