Hingham Public Schools Ranked 39th Best in State by Boston Magazine

The list can be found in the September issue which was released today.

Boston Magazine has rated Hingham 39th in a list of best school districts in Massachusetts.

The rankings can be found in Boston Magazine's September issue, which hits newsstands today.

In 2010, Hingham was ranked 34th.

Rankings were based on data gathered from consulting school officials and websites, as well as the Massachusetts Department of Education. Determining factors of the district rankings includes test scores from elementary, middle, and high schools in 135 districts.

Other criteria including student to teacher ratio, spending per pupil, number of AP classes, graduation rate, percent of students who continue to college, as well as the amount of sports teams and clubs.

Hingham Superintendent Dr. Dorothy Galo said she finds the rankings very interesting to read each year but not very helpful.

"I would find it much more helpful if they ranked each individual category," she said.

George Recck, director of the Math Resource Center at Babson College, calculated the mean scores for each category and then ranked the districts based on a weighted average of each school data point’s difference from the mean.
