 Accomplishments: 

Sydney Blasetti was so inspired by her Middle School teacher,  ’s Compost Project, that she created her own garden at home. The 13-year-old is fascinated by the scientific transformational journey of tiny seeds into plants, fruits and vegetables.

Her garden started small, mirroring the class project. When the class moved their plants to Ms. Murphy’s outside garden at Sydney asked to bring seeds home – and began sprouting seeds on her mom’s kitchen counter.

 As the Compost Project grew at school, so did Sydney’s home garden. Her father, Mark Blasetti helped her build the wooden frame for her raised planter’s box and her mother, Bridget helped paint the sides green.

 The budding gardener compiled her tools: soil, Miracle-Gro, seeds (some from home, some from class- including a pumpkin seed), and compost.

Sydney described how the lactic acid that came from their Compost Project – made of banana peels, oats, carrots and other fruits – smells bad until it goes into the air outside and drifts off.

 She likes the smell of fresh fruits and vegetables in her home garden; and the smell of them being prepared for healthy, cost-conscious meals now. Sydney is taking Home Ec at school and enjoys cooking; she wants to have a garden all the time.

 Sydney’s garden is not the only thing that inspires her family to get involved. When she began playing basketball in second grade, her mother and father wanted to interact with her, so they coached her team. All three of her younger sisters – Ryley, Perry and Haley play too.

 Now playing for the Bay State Magic Elite – part of the Amateur Athletic Union - Sydney and her team placed third in the Massachusetts state championship.  She is excited to go to the nationals in Tennessee.
