Ocean science, hockey, golf and ice cream made news in Hingham schools this week

Derby Academy Hosts Woods Hole Scientist
seventh grade earth scientists welcomed Dr. Jeff Seewald, Senior Scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, on June 1. Dr. Seewald, a geochemist, has been with WHOI for more than 20 years and has traveled the world in oceanographic research vessels.
He talked to students about hot springs on the sea floor that have temperatures as high as 750 feet. He also showed videos of how robots are used on the sea floor. These robots can break off and capture “chimneys,” small crabs, rocks, tube worms, giant clams and fluid samples, and bring these up to the vessel to study. On the surface of the water in a research vessel are up to 30 scientists discussing where the robot should go next and what kinds of experiments it should be doing. Dr. Seewald brought along many of these collected specimens for the class to see, as well.
