Industrial Technology Growing in Popularity at Hingham Schools

Industrial Technology Department presents report at last month's school committee meeting.

Graphic arts, consumer automotives, and woodworking technology are becoming more popular in Hingham, according to a report released by the Hingham Public Schools Industrial Technology department last month.

The report presented at the May 23, School Committee meeting showed that 631 l and High School students enrolled in industrial technology classes  this past school year compared to 603 during the 2009-10 school year.

currently offers 10 different industrial technology courses including classes in graphic design and photo, technical drawing, power technology, consumer automotives and woodworking.  The Middle School now offers two courses (Wood Technology and Technology Education).

HHS industrial technology teacher Ryan Eschauzier said Hingham students are getting a great education and using up-to- date tools and computers and when they reach the college level, they are way ahead of their peers.

At HHS, industrial tech students helped create the sets for the drama club performances and the book shelves for the high school library.

“We try to do our best to work with everybody around the school,” said HHS industrial technology teacher Paul Pawlowski.

According to Pawlowski, HHS received more awards than any school in state for graphic design.  Hingham High School Students won 29 awards for their artwork in this year’s Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Awards included Gold and Silver Keys, as well as Honorable Mentions. For the contest, students in grades 7-12 enrolled in public, private, and parochial schools in Massachusetts submitted paintings, film, apparel, photography, graphic design, jewelry, mixed media, prints, and sculptures.

According to HHS, Gold Key winners for Hingham included Colleen Hurley, Lillianna Jackson, Alex Walker, and Czarina Zurita. Silver Key winners include Emma Burr, Brandon Kim and Ben Williamson. Honorable Mentions went to Jane Adams, Abby Gallagher, Lillianna Jackson, Molly Kafka, Kimi Loughlin, Colin McGinnis, Elizabeth Muldoon, Rebecka Pinkham, Louis Roe, Emma Wiley, Ben Williamson, and Czarina Zurita. Junior Michelle Chouinard received three Silver Key Awards and an Honorable Mention for her work, making her the most honored student in Hingham this year.

Junior TJ Freda received one Gold Key and two Silver Key Awards. Hingham High School students were awarded 12 times in the Design category, a tie for the most in the state with Salem High School. Factoring in the Digital Art Category, Hingham High School received more awards than any school in the state for graphic design.
