MBTA 220 Bus Route May Extend to West Hingham Station

The changes could go into effect by next spring.

The 220 bus route may be changing and could head from Hingham Square to the commuter rail station in West Hingham.

The changes were proposed at Tuesday’s Selectmen meeting by Sue Sullivan, Chair  of the Hingham Development Industrial Commission.

The Selectmen voted in support of the changes which will now be considered at public meetings at Quincy City Hall before going to the MBTA for approval later this fall.  The changes could go into effect anytime from next spring to next fall.

According to MBTA service planner  Dan Webber,  the proposed changes would extend bus service to West Hingham station by creating a loop from North Street to West Hingham Station to South Street then  back north to Quincy. Buses would alternate between the new loop and the existing Hingham Center loop, which takes buses south on Main Street and back north on Central Street. The proposed new 220 bus route would also take commuters right into the Hingham Shipyard and drop them off in front of the ferry service.

“Our goal is to make it a win win for everyone,” Sullivan said.
