Notre Dame Runs Past Sharon Girls Basketball

Notre Dame cruises past Sharon.

The Notre Dame Academy of Hingham varsity girls basketball team ran past Sharon, 58-45, in the second game of the Dedham Savings Bank Girls Basketball Showcase at Sharon High School on Monday.

The Eagles (10-9) trailed by 2, 17-15, after the first quarter. The Cougars then outscored Sharon, 19-5, in the second quarter, for a 36-20 lead at halftime.

"They're one of the top teams in the state," Sharon head coach Kate Horsmann said.

"They're big. They've got a lot of speed. And we were careless with the ball."

Junior guard Katie Lowerre led Sharon with 12 points. Sophomore guard Andrea Bender added 10, and senior tri-captain and guard Jessica Shenkel had 9.

Notre Dame was led by junior tri-captain and guard Alexandra Dalton's 19 points, including 15 in the first half.

"Our kids are learning," Notre Dame head coach Michael Barrett said.

"They did a nice job on our press. We started very slow, though. The first five or six minutes, we came out slow."

Sharon finishes its regular season at 7 tonight against Holliston, in the Dedham Savings Bank Girls Basketball Showcase finale. Stoughton defeated Holliston, 53-40, in the tournament's opener.

The Eagles then awaits the seedings in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 2 South Sectional Tournament. Sharon qualified for the tourney by defeating visiting Burncoat, 58-28, here on Senior Night on Friday night.
