Seven Hingham Athletes Earn All-Scholastic Awards

Seven out of the 12 South Shore winners went to Hingham High School or Notre Dame Academy.

A total of seven Hingham athletes were awarded The Boston Globe's winter High School All-Scholastic awards earlier this month.

The winners included James Gordon, ( Boys' Hockey), Haley Lyons ( Girls' Gymnastics), Jane Freda (Hingham High School Girls' Hockey),  Julie McConville (Hingham High School Girls' Track), Amelia Brown (Notre Dame Skiing), Simon Merryweather (Hingham High School Skiing), and Mike Mui (Hingham High School Wrestling).

The seven athletes were among 188 student-athletes awarded by the Globe.

The Boston Globe All-Scholastic athletes are chosen for each of the three high school sports seasons – fall, winter and spring. The winter sports include boys’ and girls’ basketball, ice hockey, indoor track, gymnastics, swimming, skiing, and boys’ wrestling. The All-Scholastic winners are outstanding performers on fields, courses, courts and in rinks throughout eastern Massachusetts this winter.

Bob Holmes, high school sports editor for The Boston Globe said the students are recognized based on overall stats and if they are leaders on successful teams.

"Hingham has a lot of great athletes," Holmes said. "It's not only the best player on the team but it's also the best representative of Hingham High School."

Homes credited  Lyons, McConville, Brown, Merryweather,  and Mui as obvious choices because they have been successful in individual competitions.

As for Gordon, Holmes said the HHS captain was selected for helping his team advance to the Super-8.   Holmes said  after watching games, speaking with the coaching staff, and HHS athletic director Margaret Contaty,  it was clear Gordon was the leader of the team.  Holmes also credited Freda as being on the Globe's radar for two years now as she helped lead the HHS girls' hockey team to a state championship in 2011 and a very successful tournament run in 2012.

All Boston Globe All-Scholastics are selected by members of The Boston Globe high school sports staff. With the exception of prep school awards, all student-athletes are members of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) teams playing in eastern Massachusetts. Prep All-Scholastics were selected by a committee of coaches from the Independent School League and Eastern Independent League.
