Minuteman Offers Afterschool Program for Middle School Students

LEXINGTON – Minuteman High School has announced the return of its innovative afterschool program for area middle school students. Minuteman’s Career Pathways Afterschool Program is an opportunity for sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students to explore a host of career pathways through project-based learning.

The fall 2017 session will kick off on October 3. Registration is now open.

“We’re very excited to be offering this program once again,” said Allison Salisbury, Director of Community Education. “We think middle school students are really going to enjoy it.”

Minuteman officials launched the new program last year.

Students will explore career pathways through hands-on technical projects. According to school officials, students can explore 19 different career pathways through a variety of interesting projects:

• Build a Steam Powered Putt-Putt Boat: an environmental science and technology experience
• Create an Android App: A programming and web development experience
• CSI Bioquest: a biotechnology experience
• Digital Photography: a design and visual communications experience
• Ecology & Sustainability: an environmental science and technology experience
• Electrical Enlightenment: an electrical pathway experience
• Fun with Food: a culinary arts and hospitality experience
• How Engines Work: an automotive technology experience
• Intro to Graphic Design: a design and visual communications experience
• Invent and Engineer: a robotics, engineering, and automation experience
• Manufacturing Engineering: a metal fabrication and manufacturing engineering experience
• The Celebrity Look: a cosmetology experience
• The Happiness in Healthcare: a health assisting experience,
• The Importance of Plumbing: a plumbing and heating experience
• The Language of JAVA: a programming and web development experience
• American Red Cross Babysitting Course: an early education and teaching experience
• Basic Plant Science: a horticulture and landscape technology experience
• Build a Shed: a carpentry and construction experience

The sessions will be taught by Minuteman faculty at Minuteman High School in Lexington.

There will be two, four-day sessions running from 4:15-6:15 p.m. Session A will run October 3, 5, 10 and 12. Session B will run October 17, 19, 24 and 26.

Minuteman will provide free busing from each middle school within its 10-town district. A bus schedule of pick-up/drop-off locations and times will be available soon.

Students must register for the program and will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis. The cost is $100 per student per session.

Priority will be given to students living in one of Minuteman's member towns: Acton, Arlington, Belmont, Bolton, Concord, Dover, Lancaster, Lexington, Needham, and Stow.

Students from non-member communities, including Boxborough, Watertown, Everett, Waltham, Medford, Carlisle, Lincoln, Wayland, and Weston will be accepted if space is available. Transportation will not be provided to non-member cities or towns. Tuition for students from non-member communities is $500 per session.
