No More Styrofoam In Lexington

LEXINGTON, MA — Lexington is moving forward in 2020 with bylaw changes on polystyrene, straws and stirrers. At the 2019 Annual Town Meeting, the town passed bylaw changes about Expanded Polystyrene Food Serviceware, commonly called Styrofoam.

The changes went into effect on January 1, 2020 and impact certain retailers and businesses in Lexington.

The purpose of these bylaws is to eliminate the usage of:

  • single-use EPS food serviceware and packaging
  • single-use plastic straws
  • single-use plastic stirrers

The town is trying to eliminate the products from all food establishments, retail stores, and Town buildings/premises in Lexington.

By restricting the sale and distribution of these products and promoting the use of reusable or compostable products instead, this bylaw will help protect public health and the natural environment, waterways and wildlife.
