5 Things You Need to Know Today, July 19

Nice weather, crafts and an alleged axe murderer turns 151.

You're no sun of mine: While much of the US is embroiled in a three-digit heat wave, Malden will enjoy some relatively low humidity today, with daytime highs in the mid-80s projected to cool off into the gently low 70s this evening.

If you're sweating it, try to think of the poor kids in Newton, IA, where the heat index put the human-perceived temperature in the staggering mid-120s this week. Yech.

Should you need an excuse: Lisa O'Loughlin of Intercity Community Care will be the “guest bartender” from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Dockside Restaurant, where she will pour beer in support of two non-profit members of the Malden Chamber of Commerce: Mystic Valley Elder Services and Community Family Adult Day Health. Na zdrowie.

Arts and crafts, or as we used to call it...: Bored kids on your hands this summer? The Malden Public Library will host “craft time” for students both “young” and “older” as part of their weekly summer youth programming this morning and afternoon.

Those aged 3 to 6 can attend the class from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., while a class for ages 6 to 10 will be held from 3 to 4 p.m.

For more information, visit the library's website or call (781) 388-0803.

If crafts aren't your thing: The library is also offering a “teen yoga class” from 2 to 4 p.m. this afternoon.

Forty whacks with a wet noodle, Bart: July 15 is the 200th day of the year, and also the would-be 151st birthday of the notoriously accused - though never convicted – killer and Massachusetts resident Lizzie Borden.
