Girl Scouts Go for the Gold

Going for Gold

Girl Scouting of America turns one hundred years old this year. It is also the year in which Sarah Zeiberg ,16,  member of Troop 71117 in Malden is
beginning her journey toward earning the Gold Award; the organization’s highest honor. In order to be awarded this prestigious medal, two “Journeys” must be completed before starting the final Gold Award Project. Ms. Zeiberg chose to begin by taking part in the Journey entitled “Mission Sisterhood” which centers on teaching young women to grow into the responsible, independent adults that the GSA prides itself upon.

Inspired by the examples set before her as well as her Troop leader, Peggy Soper, she, along with help from her fellow troop members recently visited 89 Pearl Street, a senior living facility to spend the day and gather information about girl scouting throughout the years from the residents, particularly former scouts. The get together took the form of a birthday party including cookies, lemonade and singing on behalf of troop 71117. Asking to
share stories, the senior attendants’ gushed with tales ranging from one woman’s time in a Blind Troop to one woman’s raising of her sons to be Eagle Scouts, Boy Scouts’ highest honor.

Sarah Zeiberg is now in the process of writing up the
lengthy planning process for a more formal review. Her next Journey, she hopes, will be begun this summer in order for her to qualify to begin earning her Gold
Award by the time her Junior Year ends.
